Celebrity integrative veterinarian to speak at LSU School of Veterinary Medicine

Dr. Marty Goldstein, internationally known for his work as an integrative veterinarian, will speak at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. “Dr. Marty” (as his clients call him) will discuss case studies and integrative medicine practices as part of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine’s alumni reunion weekend on Saturday, September 29 at 11 a.m. in the LSU SVM Auditorium regarding case studies and his views of integrative medicine. This presentation is for LSU SVM alumni, faculty, staff and students, and registration is required by emailing gmorgan@lsu.edu.

On Monday, October 1 from 7 to 9 p.m. (CST), Dr. Marty is hosting his nationally syndicated Sirius satellite live radio show, “Ask Martha’s Vet,” from the LSU campus. This will be a two-hour special focusing on the integrative medicine program at the LSU SVM. Several LSU staff members will be guests on the show. Listeners can call in with their questions during the live broadcast by calling 866-675-6675.

At noon on Tuesday, October 2, in the LSU SVM Auditorium, Dr. Marty will speak about “Fundamentals of Integrating Alternative Veterinary Medicine.” This presentation is open to the public. Continuing education hours are available for veterinarians and veterinary technicians for the Tuesday presentation, and a light lunch will be available on Tuesday for those who send and RSVP via email to mmckea1@tigers.lsu.edu.

On Wednesday, October 3, Dr. Marty will lecture to first year veterinary students about integrative medicine and how it can be a part of their veterinary education and eventually their veterinary practice.

Dr. Goldstein’s objective with his numerous presentations is to give a comprehensive overview of how integrative medicine complements conventional medicine, offering highly efficacious treatment modalities.

Dr. Goldstein is the founder and medical director at Smith Ridge Veterinary Center and the author of The Nature of Animal Healing. He earned his DVM at Cornell University and is certified in veterinary acupuncture. Dr. Goldstein helped pioneer the use of cryosurgery in veterinary medicine. He devotes a lot of his time to consulting with our colleagues at Smith Ridge and with veterinarians across the country, while maintaining a limited number of his own patients. A vegetarian and avid runner, Dr. Marty, his wife and three daughters share their home with three dogs, two cats, two birds and four chickens. Dr. Marty also hosts a weekly pet talk radio show, “Ask Martha’s Vet,” on SiriusXM radio on Martha Stewart Living Radio (channel 110) on Monday nights from 7 to 8 p.m. (CST).

For three decades, Smith Ridge Veterinary Center has provided a combination of conventional and complementary veterinary medicine. The Center’s experience in the “intelligent integration” of the most effective therapies from both worlds offers a unique resource to clients seeking the best possible care for their animals.  Early in the development of the practice, Dr. Marty realizes that a combined approach would offer the strongest path to maintaining good health and promoting healing in animals. The integrated knowledge and protocols he developed are now used by all Smith Ridge veterinarians and support staff for the animals entrusted to their care.

We approach animal health from an integrative viewpoint because we believe that disease is more than just an individual symptom, or set of symptoms, to be treated,” said Dr. Goldstsein. “Organ systems and functions rely on each other to maintain health. When one system is not functioning at an optimal level, neither are some of the others. Disease is best reversed by supporting all of the compromised systems, so that the body can begin to assert itself and heal itself in a more natural manner. In addition, an animal's environment, its diet, the relationship between the animal and caregiver, genetics and prior medical treatments all influence and impact the state of health. By looking at and evaluating all of these factors, we are able to develop a treatment plan based on the individual needs of each animal.”

Dr. Marty is the personal veterinarian for Martha Stewart and has consulted on cases with well-known animal caregivers such as Hillary Swank, Oprah Winfrey, and Jerry Seinfeld, to name a few. His integrative views for veterinary medicine stem from his own pursuit of knowledge in his own health battles and general wellness. Many of his strong interests include the human-animal bond, what should our pets be eating, over-vaccination and herbal remedies. He has a passion for life and music, but mostly for our beloved companions. The LSU SVM is honored to have Dr. Marty as our September speaker in the Crow Speaker Series.
