LSU Veterinary School dean receives Distinguished Alumnus Award

The Colorado State University Alumni Association has announced that Dr. Peter Haynes will receive the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences Distinguished Alumnus Award at the Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner on October 4. Dr. Haynes received his Bachelor of Science in 1967, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1969, and Master of Science in 1974 (all from Colorado State University).

Dr. Haynes, dean of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, has served on the faculties of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University and the School of Veterinary Medicine at Louisiana State University from 1970 to the present. As a veterinarian affiliated with academic institutions, he focused his professional efforts on respiratory tract disorders, and bone and joint disorders, of performance horses. He has published 23 research papers, nine book chapters, and 67 papers in publications widely read by the equine industry. He has served on four national grant review panels and the editorial boards of four journals relevant to his professional interests. In 1978 he was named Veterinarian of the Year by the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association.

While a faculty member at LSU, Dr. Haynes has gained national recognition and prominence through service to four national veterinary medical organizations including the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, the American Association of Equine Practitioners, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges. Within these organizations, he has held many leadership positions. He has been awarded a Distinguished Life Membership in recognition of his many contributions to AAEP, and an AVMA award for outstanding national service.

Dr. Haynes is recognized as a leading educator and veterinary medical advocate in the State of Louisiana. He served as executive associate dean for the LSU SVM from 1994 to 2006, and dean from 2006 to the present.
